About TV Licences
What is a TV Licence?
A TV Licence is a legal requirement to watch or record live TV programmes on any channel, or to download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer — live, on demand, or catch up. This applies regardless of the device you use, including TVs, computers, tablets, mobile phones, games consoles, and digital boxes.
Do I need a TV Licence?
You need a TV Licence if you watch or record programmes as they are being shown on TV, or download or watch BBC programmes on BBC iPlayer. You do not need a licence if you only watch on-demand or catch-up programmes on services other than BBC iPlayer.
How much does a TV Licence cost?
A standard colour TV Licence costs £169.50 per year. A black and white TV Licence costs £57.00 per year. If you are aged 75 or over and receive Pension Credit, you may be eligible for a free TV Licence.
What does a TV Licence cover?
A TV Licence covers your entire household. Everyone who lives at the address is covered, regardless of the number of devices used. You do not need separate licences for each TV or device.
